This week offers some tough cards. The Winter Tower appears which is never a welcome sign but among the hustle of a new year, we find ourselves with cards inviting us to slow down. Cards like the Four of Winter Swords and the Hermit.
I have been feeling the weight of winter this year especially. I would be lying if I said seeing the Winter Tower didn’t put a pit in the bottom of my stomach. But the good news is that these are our last challenging cards of the month. The next few weeks offers a much needed energy of restoration and hope.
Take care to find rest this week, however you can. Listen to what the season is telling you and allow yourself to be in this space of pause and hibernation. Know that you aren’t ready for all of the answers yet but you will be soon.

→ Four of Winter Cups
I have always felt as though apathy isn’t the only story when you look at this card. Sure, the figure could be bored with life or disengaged but what if that isn’t a bad thing? What if this figure is content more so than apathetic? What if they simply have all that they need and are in a position to say no? When this card appears, it's because you’re closed off from incoming opportunities. Your job is to determine whether or not this is an intentional act of self-care, self-awareness or contentment or if you are shut off in a way that isn’t serving you. Sometimes saying no is the most powerful thing you can offer yourself; a wise form of self-investment. But it can just as easily be a way to stay rooted in an outdated way of thinking. The line between the two is razor thin. You may not have the answer to this question today and that’s ok. This card has arrived to nudge you to open yourself up just a little, even if only in the confines of your own mind.

→ The Winter Hermit
Do not mistake the hermit as an excuse to dig deeper into solitude. This card is not validation that you are an introvert nor is it an excuse to cancel meaningful plans. The hermit represents solitude for the purpose of self-connection. It offers a moment to recover your values, your purpose and the things that are most important to you. Meditation is not required when this card comes along, only a willingness to disconnect from the chaos of everyday life. Ten minutes sitting alone on your porch can be just as impactful as a silent retreat when approached with the right intention. If you have been searching for answers or just feeling a general sense of drifting, then pay special attention to this card. The answers are there, your mind is just too busy to grab ahold of them.

→ The Winter Tower
The tower is never an easy card to receive. It represents your structure crashing down around you. Something you thought to be stable and supportive turned out to be the very thing that breaks you down. When this card appears, there is nothing more you can do to save what’s already broken. This is no longer about repair. It’s time to start thinking about what comes next. It’s time to start moving forward knowing that whatever you had in the past is no longer an option. Will it feel painful, well yes, probably. Things might be broken down but it hurts because of how meaningful it was. Focusing on rebuilding isn’t going to change the damage and any lingering feelings from it. But, knowing things are truly over at least gives you the freedom to heal. You know your situation now which means you can do something about it.

→ Four of Winter Swords
The four of swords is a signal of stress. You have been so thoroughly depleted that rest may no longer be enough. This is a deep kind of fatigue. One that cannot be cured with a nap or an extra hour of sleep. Sleeping more may help but you are beyond that now. It's time to start looking at the quality of your sleep in addition to the duration. You may also need to consider ways to replenish your spirit during challenging times. Perhaps a problem has taken its toll on you in which case, this card might mean needing to learn to manage stress better. Rest for this card means a return to peace, whatever that looks like for you. Don’t see this as a failure. Be honest with what you're feeling and take steps to address it before you find yourself doing so in a way that is beyond your control.

→ Six of Winter Wands
The first word that always comes to mind with this card is fame but I think we sometimes get caught up in the idea that fame means being a celebrity. Not necessarily. It could mean that of course in extreme cases but this card is really just about being noticed. It’s about getting deserved recognition for all that you have done or given. It’s validation that you are good at your job, at taking care of a task or even just a good person all around. Receiving this card means others see you, even when you think no one notices how much you do. This is especially true for caregivers out there. Or the unsung heroes. You may not get the words but know that your contribution matters and that people are grateful. Sometimes giving praise to others is hard but that doesn’t mean it isn’t felt. This card invites you to see yourself as a success too. It doesn’t matter if people are blowing the trumpets for you when you walk by. What matters is that you know you’ve done a great job.

→ Nine of Winter Pentacles
This card marks a significant shift in your journey this month. Tomorrow’s card is the last “negative” card of the month and perhaps the card for January 31st. But other than that, this card sets the tone for what could be a restorative and uplifting few weeks. With the nine of pentacles, this card invites you to take a look around and say “I made it.” Something is working out in your favor today. Perhaps a new way of thinking finally clicks into place and your confidence grows with this realization. Or maybe you finally understand what it means to be grateful and it shows. It could also represent a feeling of relief after making it through a really rough time. Ultimately, this card is about acknowledging your success or a positive outcome. Do your best to enjoy it.
