First Impressions
Full disclosure, I was not at all interested in this deck which is why it wasn’t sent as a review deck. I didn’t resonate with the look or the art and honestly didn’t feel any draw to it at all. But then I had the chance to meet Outi in person during an event we both spoke at. She got up to do her talk and you could see she was nervous… it was quite obvious.
She picked up her deck and started fidgeting with it then finally pulled out the cards. She looked at the very first card on top—Queen of Insecurity (click here to see photo down below)---and laughed. She then said and I’m paraphrasing, of course she would see that card first because that’s how she feels at this moment. She acknowledged her insecurity and proceeded to tell us this was her first time talking publicly about her deck. A little later, she talked about how liberating it is to say how you feel openly and without shame. Then she told us why she made this deck.
Listening to her speak is the sole reason I purchased this deck. I was so captivated by her even though she was visibly nervous. I have done many, many talks and workshops and the like and have been nervous every single time but I’ve never been that brave to just say “I’m scared.” I found a deep sense of respect for Outi and knew I needed to purchase her deck and that I needed to share it. So, let’s dive in.
The Packaging
If you read my reviews regularly then you know Rockpool has great packaging. More than that, they have the most consistently amazing packaging. Other publishers have good packaging for the people they think will sell a lot and not so good packaging for everyone else. Rockpool just has great packaging across the board. Every set has colored sides, every box is nice and sturdy with full color printing inside, most if not all decks have foiling and the guidebooks are always full color. In terms of packaging, you really can’t ask for more than that.
The cards are a little thick on this one and I’m finding it challenging to shuffle. The cards are pretty stiff which I suspect has to do with the gold sides. They’re glittery which means they’re a bit thicker than regular gold and you can tell the cards are a bit thicker too. It obviously matches the deck but makes it just a little complicated to shuffle.
The cards themselves are matte, which I think Rockpool is switching to matte all together since I haven’t gotten a glossy deck from them in a while. And let’s hope so because I absolutely hate glossy cards. If I had it my way, all of the Seasons of the Witch cards would be reprinted in matte for sure.
The Guidebook
The guidebook is full color as I mentioned before. It contains an introduction, a section on how to use the cards, and three spreads. The card meanings are broken up into an introduction, a section for how to find this queen inside and one for explaining her gifts.
Aside from Outi’s speech, what I love about this deck is the concept. She doesn’t explicitly say it but it really reminds me of the type of therapy I’ve used now for eight years which is called Internal Family Systems. I’ve mentioned IFS in these reviews many times but this is perhaps the closest I’ve seen in oracle form.
The concept is that we all have layers. We all have different versions of ourselves that show up at different times and for many different reasons. And each version has something to offer you, even the ones that don’t make you feel good. This is exactly what IFS teaches you. That not only is it ok to have different versions of you but it's normal and everyone else experiences the same thing.
In IFS, we don’t say triggered, we say blended. Something happens, a part is activated and then it blends with you so that you and the part become one. Once this happens, you start acting from the parts perspective. You behave the way the part behaves instead of the way your pure self would respond. This can lead to all sorts of trouble. You might lash out because of a hurt part, or miss out on an opportunity because of a fearful part. You might sabotage a relationship because of a resentful part or give into laziness because of a part that doesn’t feel less than.
Sometimes, just acknowledging a part is enough to give you space between you and them so that you can start operating from your pure self. Sometimes you need more than that which is where an IFS therapist comes into play. But often, just letting the part know you see and accept them is enough for them to relax, just like Outi did with her insecure part.
The queens in this deck are your parts by another name. They come up for any number of reasons and this deck helps you to identify some of them when you aren’t able to name them yourself. It's a really clever concept. You just ask which part or queen in this case is present and draw a card. You might pull the queen of adventure or the queen of sensuality and then you’ll know that’s the part that needs your attention right now. And of course, there’s advice on how to approach each queen when she arrives.
I think this is an excellent deck to draw from to start a reading. It gives you a sense of where your energy is at before pulling cards from a tarot deck or additional oracle. It's also amazing for a daily pull deck, especially at the end of the day. Just being able to say “oh, that’s who I was today” can open up a lot of understanding and more importantly, self-compassion.
The Artwork
Outi paints all of these cards intuitively and without agenda. I’m not a super huge fan of the style but that doesn’t mean it isn’t beautiful. My favorite card is queen of pure essence and if I’m being honest, it's because the style is pretty minimal. It's only white, shades of light blue and gray which speaks to my personal aesthetic more than anything else in the deck. And looking at all of my favorites, I’ve definitely resonated most with the more minimal cards.
“We are queens like a deliciously layered cake with various characters, flavors, and textures.”
The art is quite colorful, busy, and expressive. It kind of reminds me of a collage style. It's also very feminine and flowy. No lines are too harsh or sharp so it feels very soft despite the bright colors. It lacks any sort of perfection which is the most appealing part. None of the figures are classically beautiful or neat which speaks to the heart of the deck. Life isn’t neat and we don’t always show up as the person we want to be in every moment. I would argue that most people rarely if ever show up as the person they want to be in every moment. The images capture those feelings we all experience. So the art feels honest and representative of everyday life.
Reading With this Deck
I took this with me on a recent vacation as my daily draw deck. I found it to be so accurate. In fact, the card I drew on the day I got on the plane was the Queen of adventure and how appropriate is that? I felt like it really understood my energy every time I pulled a card.
I don’t really like this deck for spreads though. It's not that you can use it for spreads and it does come with three. I just like the idea of using these cards to check in with my energy. That’s enough for me. That gives me a feeling of contentment and not having to force myself to seek anything else. I also like the idea of pulling from this card to see what part showed up in a particular experience like an argument. Imagine fighting with your partner and drawing something like Queen of breaking the spell. How validating is that to know that you can see through the bullshit? They can’t gaslight you. You have clarity and so on.
Or it might help you to identify other feelings like where your energy is at work or before a big presentation at work or before a date. Perhaps how you’re showing up with your kids, friends, or even how you show up with strangers. This deck can be really powerful in terms of just knowing what operating manual you’re drawing from.
Collective Pull
I drew Queen of internal fulfillment for you. I also drew this for me as it spoke directly to a conversation I had with my therapist just the day before. And then I flipped to the entry in the guidebook only to stop on the one just before it. Both of those cards pretty much summed up the entire conversation I had with my therapist so believe me, this deck is spot on.
The queen of internal fulfillment wants you to understand you have no control over external forces. The only thing you can control is how you respond to what happens to you. You can’t change someone’s mind or force them to do things your way. But you can change your behavior towards them. So that might look like not giving into an argument or speaking up for yourself.
Another meaning for this card is stop seeking permission from others to be the person you want to be. By that I mean, stop expecting others to treat you better and start demanding it. Stop waiting for someone to love you and find someone who you don’t need to convince you’re worthy of love. Stop waiting for someone to give you an opportunity and create one of your own. You don’t need anyone’s permission or understanding or even acceptance for you to live your life the way that you want. Your life is in your control. That doesn’t mean it won’t be challenging or that you won’t have to give something up but at least its your choice.
Season, Sign, Element and Sabbat
I chose summer for this deck. It's so bright and colorful, almost too much which reminded me of a bright summer day when it feels like the sun is beaming down on you. You love being out in the sunshine but you also might catch a sunburn. That’s the energy I keep picking up so summer it is.
I chose Air for the element. I wanted to go with water especially because this deck has what I thought was a fluid quality but then I really looked at it and instead of flow I saw wind. I wrote this review at my parent’s place where there’s a big window and a deep maroon tree right in front of it. It's always windy where they live since it's a desert and surrounded by mountains everywhere you look. I looked up and saw this tree blowing in the wind and I thought “yes, that’s what this deck feels like.” Nothing too strong, just a gentle breeze that feels serene and peaceful.
I chose litha for the sabbat mostly because of the colors and Leo for the sense of self-awareness and sovereignty. Leo is really self focused—not in a bad way if expressed correctly—and I think this would be the most amazing daily pull deck for Leo season.
Who is this deck for?
I think this a great deck for anyone who’s familiar with Internal Family Systems but also anyone who sees a therapist regularly. If you’re someone who really takes self-development seriously then I think you’ll get so much value and understanding out of this deck.
If you’re someone who does the work and actually applies the knowledge, then I think this deck will be an excellent addition to your collection. Everyone can get something out of it for sure but I think this deck is really for a certain kind of person who is comfortable with their flaws and the different masks that they wear. This feels like a deck for the self-aware person and if that’s you, I wouldn’t hesitate even if like me, you don’t resonate with the artwork.
Tarot Deck Companion
A few reviews ago, I messed up and selected an oracle companion rather than a tarot companion for one of the oracle decks I reviewed. But here’s the thing, I loved the pairing so much that I just went along with it. When it came to this deck, I kept thinking about an oracle deck I’ve had for years—Love Your Inner Goddess Oracle—and I knew I wanted them to be paired together. The artwork is so similar, they could’ve been by the same artist. In fact, I had to double check that they weren’t.
And here’s the thing, it's perfectly fine to layer two oracle decks or two tarot decks and I kind of love the idea of recommending different forms of companions. So there you have it. I just love the pairing so much. Keep in mind, the artwork is very busy in both but I felt like that’s why they could carry each other. Outi’s art is very chaotic but she’s just so peaceful and grounded. I’ve often wondered if she can be so rooted because she pours everything into her art.
