Deck Companion: I’m doing some a little different this time.

First Impressions

I knew I wanted this deck right away. I actually saw it well before it was available, during the design process since it comes from my publishing house, Rockpool. And I loved it right away, mostly because it reminds me of my little decks that I never talk about enough: Affirmations and Gratitude. It's also very soft and feminine and if you’ve been reading my reviews the past few weeks then you know I’m entering my Empress era (found this out in a recent astrology and tarot reading). And this deck feels like the Empress contained in a box but it's not really an oracle deck. However I do love it and I’ll explain more in a bit. For now, packaging.

The Packaging

Box is nice with a book fold, magnetic lid. It's also very sturdy. What I love most about the box is the canvas-like feel. I absolutely love a textured box. I think life should be lived through a sensual lens and having different textures really contributes to that. It's a soft shade of pinkish beige and inside features a nice dark gold. Sitting underneath the cards, you’ll find a card stand which is a nice touch. You don’t often get things like that included inside the box and this is what I mean with Rockpool. Check out my other Rockpool deck reviews if you want to see some amazing packaging. They always have nice surprises that frankly, no one or at least very few others are doing.

The cards are matte which is my preference and they have gold edges that match the interior of the box. The thickness of the cards is pretty standard for Rockpool. They feel exactly like the same thickness as the Seasons of the Witch oracles. I think an A+ is perfectly well deserved when it comes to packing on this one.

The Guidebook

The guidebook is very, very small. It's only 15 pages in total so don’t expect a lot. This isn’t really an oracle deck although I have been using it that way. But really, these are affirmation cards or as the box suggests; Mantra cards. Although, the entries in the guidebook do read like divination meanings. There’s certainly enough to use it that way in any case. But you won’t find any card spreads or bonus material. There is a short introduction and one paragraph on how to use the cards. And each card has a short meaning as well as an action you can take to summon the energy of the card.

The Artwork

I love, love, love the artwork. The color palette is so deliciously consistent featuring a variety of pink shades with pops of purple, gold, cream and navy spread throughout. It feels very feminine and flirty and soft and graceful; all the things I’m looking for these days. My favorite card is Meditate. The purple poppies really stand out and I don’t even like purple. But the pop of color really drew me in, the same thing happened with the abundance card.

“Designed to illuminate your path with love, wisdom and enlightenment, each card carries the power to uplift your spirit, offer insight and remind you that love and light are always within reach.

I also really love Share Your Uniqueness. It's the only image with a winter like scene which felt appropriate because it really stands out from the rest of the deck. And for a card about being different, I can honestly say, mission accomplished. The whole deck is soothing and it's hard not to like it. I’ve decided to keep this one by my bedside and have been pulling a card each day.

And that is how the creator intended it to be used. She mentions it in the short paragraph in the front but as I said before, you can absolutely use it as an oracle deck. It is very positive though. I think “love and light” is the perfect name for it because it does feel like that new aged, somewhat fluff, mainstream energy. I personally don’t mind that. I think the “love and light” culture is often unfairly misjudged. Sure, some of it isn’t sustainable or realistic or is even spiritual bypassing but it isn’t all bad and it has its benefits when used the right way. Continued below…

And when I did my deck interview, I didn't feel like it was so positive that I didn’t get anything from it. In fact, it told me this deck isn’t about helping other people but me stepping into my personal power and staying true to myself. Yes, it speaks a lot about manifestation but so do I and so far, it's felt pretty perfect to me.

Season, Sign and Sabbat

I went with Spring for the season. Spring feels like the most feminine to me plus there are a lot of flowers and other symbols that feel like spring. I could also see it doing quite well energetically in Autumn which makes sense as I have assigned it to Libra. Libra is of course the sign of beauty, harmony, balance, feminine energy thanks to its connection with Venus and thus, Aphrodite. Plus the color palette is what I imagine Libra looks like.  But also, Venus is the ruling planet of both Libra and Taurus so a lot of what makes it correspond to Libra also speaks quite well to Taurus.

Finally, I chose Beltane for the sabbat for the same reasons I chose spring and for the season. It feels like it has May and early June energy with all of the flowers and although it doesn’t have a pink moon specifically, it carries a pink moon vibe.

Who is this deck for?

It's a great daily draw deck so if you’re someone who just likes to pull a card or two every day then you’ll love this deck. I also think you’ll love it if you’re into divine feminism or if more lightweight spirituality is more your speed. It isn’t a deep, dark and dirty witchy deck by any means and I think that’s ok. To be honest, I’ve kind of been moving away from darker decks lately. I feel like I’ve spent the past ten years in shadow energy which was needed at the time but I love this lighter energy.

Oracle Deck Companion

I’m going to recommend something else instead of a tarot deck since this is not a traditional oracle deck. I’m going to recommend my little affirmations decks which are Affirmations and Gratitude. You can see photos of Gratitude below. I think they are very similar and basically work the same way. I’ve been enjoying pulling a card from each deck, making note of the similarities in the messages. And I intended to have my little decks small so that they’re transportable. You can pull a Love and Light Mantra Card then toss one of my little decks in your bag and pull them throughout the day.
